This approximately 90-minute workshop addresses the nightlife and sexual experiences of students and young adults today, and offers them tools to shift from a default hookup culture to an intentional consent culture.
- Examine the social pressures and rules of hookup culture. Go through the common stages of a “hookup:” pregame, initiate physical contact with a potential hookup, participate in the casual sexual experience, and establish “meaninglessness” afterwards.
- Participate in breakout discussions to think about ways that these hookup culture stages inhibits successful consent practices.
- Learn how successful consent is freely given, informed, specific, affirmative, enthusiastic, ongoing, and reversible. Explore specific and realistic phrases and behaviors that young adults can utilize to enact successful consent practices.
- Address power dynamics based on identity that impact consent.
- Explore these topics in a workshop tailored to the specific culture, nightlife traditions, and geography of your community.
- Learn self-advocacy skills and how one can comfortably communicate interest or disinterest in a sexual situation, as well as what appropriate responses might be to either answer.
This workshop has already found great success in communities of young adults. It would be a joy to bring it to your community next.
